Introduction

Peter Blanck interviews Professor William Whyte about his work as a field researcher. Whyte goes on to describe the challenges young field researchers will face in the field, how he approaches a new study, the skills necessary for a good field researcher, and the best way to take notes in the field. Whyte discusses ethical issues in field research, his relationship with Ralph Orlandella, and his wife’s handling of having to live in the North End. The interview concludes with Whyte telling Blanck what he finds most satisfying about his work and the future of “street corner societies.”
