Each year we bring national leaders in the field of adapted sports and inclusive recreation to Syracuse in order to foster innovation and inclusion in our community.  We try to change up the format and venue each year.  The Fit-In conference is archived on our website in order to reach a wide audience.

The Sensational Inspiration Movement Seminar will be an action-oriented workshop that will focus on the sensory needs of children with multiple disabilities. The seminar will engage participants, speakers, families, and children in meaningful discussion while sharing, designing, and creating sensory based solutions that promote independence, enhance physical activity, and celebrate inclusion!

Seminar Format

Morning:Talks with national leaders in the field of inclusive play. Tour SIMS lab and try out musical instruments

Afternoon: Families describe design wishes. Teams gather around 5 kids. Break with music by kids and with local musician Joe Davoli. Presentation of design ideas

Marnie Norris is the Director of Programs for Shane’s Inspiration and has worked with them since 2002. Shane’s Inspiration is a national organization whose vision is to foster a bias-free world for children with disabilities. Their mission is to create inclusive playgrounds and sustainable programs that unite children of all abilities.

Diane Scanlan is the Sr. Vice President of Design for Shane’s Inspiration. She is a licensed Landscape Architect in the state of California and holds a graduate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts and Science from Northwestern University. She is an active member of ASLA, and brings over 20 years of experience as a Project Architect/Manager to Shane’s Inspiration. Diane has worked with a number of Landscape Architecture firms in Los Angeles, most notably Melendrez Design Partners and the LA Group, focusing on Municipal park and Streetscape projects up until her association with Shane’s Inspiration in 2006. She has designed over 40 playgrounds throughout the United States, and as far away as Tel Aviv, Israel and Sochi, Russia.  Current projects include a sensory play space at Carnegie Hall in New York City.  Diane’s goal is to create unique, innovative play spaces that engage children of all ages and abilities. Her designs are sensory rich, thematic, age appropriate and support multi-generational play for all.

Jared Carroll

Jared Carroll joined Right To Play USA in September 2013 and is the Director of “Play at the Core”, which is Right To Play‘s early learning program serving disadvantaged communities. Jared has over 10 years of experience in therapeutic recreation programs and has worked with children impacted by trauma. He received a BA in History from Boston College and is currently pursuing an MSW from New York University. He works with over 35 early childhood education centers throughout high-need communities in the Bronx, Harlem, Washington Heights, and Brooklyn. Right to Play endorses child development programming that is more holistic, more intentionally-implemented, and more locally-owned, ultimately leading to significant and sustainable gains in education program quality.

Timothy Davis

Timothy D. Davis is a faculty member in the Department of Physical Education at SUNY Cortland. He is the director of the Sensory Integration Motor Sensory Lab and coordinator of the Skill Builders/Challenger Sports Program. Both programs serve local youth and families with disability. In addition, Dr. Davis serves his profession as the national chair of the Adapted Physical Education National Standards and oversees the standards and national certification process for Adapted Physical Educators which is sponsored by the Consortium for Physical Education and Individuals with Disabilities.

Dr. Stephen P. Yang is an Assistant Professor in SUNY Oswego’s Department of Health Promotion & Wellness.  H

e received his Ph.D (Kinesiology) from Penn State University, his M.S. in Exercise & Sport Science (Kinesiology) from the University of New Brunswick (New Brunswick, Canada) and his B.S. (Physical Education) from St. Francis Xavier University (Nova Scotia, Canada). Dr. Yang researches the effectiveness of using fitness video games (exergaming) and mobile technologies and has been an invited speaker to several national and international conferences. He is a contributor to the Games for Health (GFH) Project (www.gamesforhealth.org),  and consults with video game and mobile app developers, fitness companies, as well as toy companies on products and programming.

Joe Davoli is a graduate of DePaul University and attended the Berklee School of Music. He has won two Sammy’s (Syracuse Area Music Awards). He is currently a full-time member of Ceili Rain and is in demand as a studio musician and teacher. Joe is passionate about teaching and works with students of all ages and levels. He was inducted into the North American Fiddler’s Hall of Fame in 2017.

Fitness Inclusion Network is a collaborative, cross-institution initiative that was launched in 2013 with support from the Upstate Foundation/Golisano Children’s Hospital, SUNY Cortland Department of Physical Education, and the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University. Fit-In is an interdisciplinary group of athletes, students, families, and professionals in adapted physical education, medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, engineering, therapeutic recreation, special education, social work, and disability policy and law. Fit-In’s Mission is to develop innovative ways to promote and support inclusive fitness for children, adolescents, and adults with disabilities in Central New York. Syracuse Adaptive Design Association is a volunteer collective of people with all types of abilities, their families and friends, clinicians, designers and makers. People with disabilities and their families are equal members of their design teams. Together they identify solutions to provide access and full participation in a wide range of activities and settings.
