Southeast ADA Center celebrates National Disability Employment Awareness Month and Disability Mentoring Day

The Southeast ADA Center, a project of the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University, coordinated five National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) activities with businesses in the Atlanta, Ga. area. Darden Restaurants (Longhorn Steak House and Olive Garden) and Wal-Mart (Sam’s Club) stepped up to the plate by providing job shadowing and meal donations for 68 youth and adults with disabilities. BBI provides emergency preparedness guidance for people with disabilities

Study: People with disabilities sidelined in American politics

People with disabilities remain largely sidelined in American politics, according to a new study published in Social Science Quarterly. The research article, “Sidelined or Mainstreamed? Political Participation and Attitudes of People with Disabilities in the United States,” is authored by Lisa Schur, Rutgers University associate professor, and Meera Adya, Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University director of research. ADA anniversary serves as a reminder of making the world more inclusive

The ADA was signed into law on July 26, 1990, increasing opportunities experienced by people with disabilities. In the weeks leading up to the July 26th anniversary, groups of people with disabilities, Centers for Independent Living, disability organizations, and State and local governments will be celebrating the full and active participation in community life made possible by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
