Psychiatric Advance Directives: Lived Experience and Implementation Among Individuals with Serious Mental Illness

Project Overview

This project examines the real-world use of Psychiatric Advance Directives (PADs) among individuals with serious mental illness (SMI). Through in-depth qualitative interviews, the study explores the types of PADs participants use, their goals and effectiveness, and the personal impact of creating and implementing these documents. The research aims to generate meaningful insights that can inform best practices around PAD development, access, and implementation for people with SMI.

Goals and Objectives

  • Identify the range of PAD types currently used by individuals with SMI and examine their distinct aims, strengths, and limitations.
  • Explore how the development and use of PADs has impacted participants’ lives and self-determination.
  • Understand how individuals modify their PADs over time and what factors influence those changes.
  • Identify barriers participants face when attempting to implement their PADs.
  • Produce a narrative report with findings and conclusions to advance knowledge and inform policy and practice related to psychiatric advance planning.
