Baseball

  • Title: Syracuse Challenger Baseball

    Description: We welcome all children with disabilities on our junior, adult and senior teams. Each child receives a jersey and a hat with his team’s colors and logo. There is plenty of equipment (bats, balls, helmets, gloves, bases, etc.) for the children to use, but players should bring their own gloves and bats if they have them.
    Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, there are no fees to play Challenger Baseball. All that is required is children and families to come out and enjoy America’s pastime sport with the child’s peers in a wonderful summertime setting. The Sitrin Celebrity Classic Wheelchair Basketball Game, held each spring, features local celebrities and other prominent members of the community who compete chair-to-chair with the Sitrin STARS athletes.

    Description: Biathlon is a popular sport that combines target shooting and cross-country skiing. Sitrin’s biathlon training program is year-round, incorporating the use of paved trails, SkiErg® machines, and roller skis during the off-season. Sitrin’s biathletes have had the opportunity to compete at both the regional and national levels. The program is designed for training with stand-up or sit-ski equipment, depending upon the athlete’s ability. Athletes do not need to have prior skiing experience to participate. Coaches teach basic concepts and techniques involved in both skiing and shooting.

    Description: An inclusive cheer program designed to reach individuals where they are at and show off their different abilities using various sensory techniques while working on gross motor skills, social skills, and just having fun! This team is completely free; they cover everything except when they travel parents have to pay their own cost. They do multiple fundraisers to help cover or ease those expenses. All are welcome to join, boys and girls ages 5+ and there’s no cap on age. They work with everyone’s cognitive abilities and individualize and tailor what they do based on each child’s specific needs.

    Description: Sitrin’s STARS program trains competitors for the Wheelchair Division of America’s largest 15K road race, The Boilermaker, held in Utica, NY. STARS road racing athletes also compete in other races throughout the country, including the New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, and Miami Marathon. Additionally, Sitrin is the proud sponsor of the Boilermaker Wheelchair Challenge, which awards customized racing chairs to athletes who complete the course in less than two hours and 15 minutes in a standard wheelchair.

  • Title: “I Can Ride” Bike Camp
    Type: Unified Sport  
    Organization: STRIDE Adaptive Sports with “iCan Shine”
    Description: This camp is designed to teach children with special needs how to ride a two-wheeled bike. The unique five day bike riding program is coordinated with iCan Shine’s iCan Bike program (formerly known as Lose the Training Wheels). The organization provides a fleet of adaptive bikes designed to ensure the success of all riders. The philosophy and technology of the program has impressive evidence for success in youth with Autism and other youth with special needs or disabilities.
    Campers participate one 90-minute session daily for a week. Each camper is assigned a trained volunteer who runs alongside them to ensure safety. STRIDE will assist campers in getting their own bicycle after camp, if needed.

  • Title: Golf Program

    Description: STRIDE offers two seasonal multi-week golf programs centered on a curriculum for skill building. Each session in spring and fall teaches basic golf skills with adaptive techniques and equipment used for anyone with special needs. Program participation can lead to both independent and competitive play.
    New this year, the instruction is provided on three holes of the course and golf range using buckets of balls for lots of practice. Family members are invited to stay during lessons and may assist other students. There is a maximum of 10 participants per session. Due to course and golf club restrictions, participants must be at least 8 years old and 3 feet tall.

Sled Hockey

  • Title: Sled Hockey

    Description: Sled Hockey is very similar to ice hockey with the exception of equipment.  Participants use specially designed sleds which sit atop two ice hockey skate blades.  Each player has two short hockey sticks with metal picks on the end which are used to propel him/her across the ice. The Sled Hockey program is designed for both beginners and experienced players of all ages. The Sled Hockey program provides its participants with sleds, hockey sticks, and a helmet to use during practices and games. Equipment is limited and individuals with physical disabilities will be given priority over our able-bodied participants.

Focus is on sensory transition, basic instruction, and water safety.
