Project Overview
Supported Decision-Making (SDM) is a person-centered decision-making paradigm that enables people with disabilities to make their own decisions with assistance from trusted supporters including friends, family members, and professionals.
AHRC NYC and BBI are collaborating on a study that will empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to use SDM and document, through objective data, changes to their decision-making processes and quality of life indicators over time.
Goals and Objectives
- Publish an article summarizing the purpose and work done in Phase 1 as well as promising findings, limitations, and implications for future research arising from Phase 1.
- Conduct group and one-on-on discussions with AHRC NYC to identify strategies for a Phase 2 project that will build on the promising findings and address the limitations in Phase 2 by empowering people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to use SDM and document, through objective evidence, changes to their decision-making processes and quality of life indicators over time.
- Research and develop customized tools and methodologies and identify validated data collection and analysis tools that can be used in the Phase 2 project.
- Draft and present to AHRC NYC a proposal for a Phase 2 project that can be taken to funding entities for support.
