Ability Beyond Disability is a non-profit organization that assists persons with disabilities in finding and maintaining employment. For job seekers, Ability’s website provides individual placement services, group supported employment training programs, provides tips for interviewing, and sample resumes and cover letter. The site facilitates the posting of jobs for employers who are recruiting persons with disabilities.

Affordable Colleges Online

Affordable Colleges Online includes two key resources: 1) College Resources for Students with Disabilities providing specific information and resources on a variety of different disabilities, transitioning into college, your legal rights on college campuses, and making transition into the workforce easier; and 2) College Scholarships and Financial Aids for Students with Disabilities provides numerous  selective scholarship opportunities targeting students with disabilities.

BestColleges.com is an online, college planning resource for current and prospective students. Designed to be the first stop for students planning the next step in their education, they offer a number of academic guides to help students succeed once enrolled in school. They have compiled strategies for students with disabilities to better weather the jump from college-to-career.

COPD provides a Career Gateway for students with disabilities and employers seeking their services. Career Gateway is a national recruiting database where students post resumes, browse for jobs, and communicate with employers in a direct manner. Career Gateway requires a student to self-identify as having a disability.

Careers & the disAbled is a quarterly publication devoted to giving career and recruiting advice to persons with disabilities. The publication’s websites includes a  Website (Companies Actively Recruiting) that highlights employers around the nation that actively recruit and hire students and professionals with disabilities.

Careers Support Solutions (formerly – CAREERS for Persons with Disabilities)

CAREERS is a non-profit organization that helps individuals with disabilities in Westchester and Putnam counties find gainful employment. CAREERS employees provide free individualized counseling to its clients in order to assist individuals with disabilities in finding and maintaining optimal employment.

Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (C.H.A.D.D.)

C.H.A.D.D. is a national network, with local affiliates, providing services to children and adults with AD/HD. Job services provided by C.H.A.D.D. include: continuing education services and facilitation of a network of individuals with AD/HD, professionals, employers, and care givers.

Connecticut Association for Children & Adults with Learning Disabilities (CACLD) 

CACLD is a non-profit organization that provides a variety of services to both children and adults with learning disabilities, including job services. Job services for students with disabilities entering the workforce include: one-on-one counseling services, job placement and referral services, career advising, access to a diverse network of employers and experts, and information services including conferences, seminars, and workshops.

Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking and Technology (DO-IT)

DO-IT is a non-profit organization associated with the University of Washington that provides services to persons with disabilities seeking challenging academic programs and careers. DO-IT provides a host of free and low-cost resources to students with disabilities, educators, employers, and other interested parties which highlight the issues and barriers for persons with disability in the workforce.

Disability Mentoring Day (DMD)

DMD is an initiative funded by the American Association of Disabled Persons designed to promote career development for students with disabilities by providing hands-on career exploration. DMD matches students with disability with a mentor in a career field that the student is interested in. The mentor trains and educates the student on the requirements necessary for entering a particular area of employment.

Diversity Career Resources for Persons with Disabilities

Emerging Leaders is a competitive national program that provides placement in internships for self-identifying students with disabilities, as defined under the ADA. The organization has partnerships with many businesses, including Fortune 500 companies, to facilitate competitive and fulfilling summer internships.

Entry Point

Entry Point is online program created by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The site is a database of internship opportunities available to persons with disabilities. The internships are all science, mathematics, computer science, and engineering related positions. The site also gives tips and advice for interviewing to students seeking an internship.

High Growth Occupations in New York State

New York Makes York Pay, a comprehensive employment grant from the United States Department of Education, published a report called High Growth Occupations in New York State. The report breaks down those occupations (by industry) in New York State where job growth is expected over the next several years. The purpose of the publication is to address New York State’s estimated 70% of working-age people with disabilities

Job Accommodation Network (JAN)

JAN is a federal agency under the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability and Employment Policy. JAN provides a wealth of information about job accommodations for to persons with disabilities and employers in an effort to increase the hiring, retention, training, and advancement of persons with disabilities. In particular, JAN has consulting staff available through a toll-free national hotline.

Leadership for the Employment of Americans with Disabilities (LEAD)

LEAD is an initiative of the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission created specifically to increase the employment of persons with disabilities in the federal workforce, particularly those individuals with severe disabilities. For job seekers, LEAD provides resource to educate those with severe disabilities how to navigate the federal legislative and administrative system to receive hiring preferences. LEAD also provides job seekers with information regarding hiring, recruitment, and reasonable accommodations.

Monster.com Diversity & Inclusion Program

Monster.com’s Diversity & Inclusion Program allows students with disabilities to search for jobs that fit their career desires and requirements. In addition, the program provides several articles and resources for specific issues that persons with disabilities face in the workforce.

National Business and Disabilities Council (NBDC)

The NBDC is a free, non-profit resource for persons with disabilities seeking employment. The NBDC Job-On-It resource allows persons with disabilities to post resumes. NBDC also provides resume review services, a thorough job search of positions around the country, advice on disclosure of disabilities, and job/internship referral and placement services.

National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID)

The NTID is a co-operative between the Rochester Institute of Technology and business around the country. NTID matches deaf students and recent graduates with job-training programs in order to give students the skills necessary to gain employment in a variety of technical fields.

Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities

VESID is a New York state agency that provides a variety of services for persons with disabilities and employers in order to facilitate independence and employment of persons with disabilities. Onondaga Pathways to Careers

The Onondaga Pathways to Careers (OPC) demonstration project provides an opportunity for young people with disabilities to enroll at Onondaga Community College (OCC), earn an industry-recognized credential, and acquire a job that pays a living wage in the local workforce. OCC is partnering with Syracuse University (SU), the Syracuse City School District (SCSD), the public workforce system, disability service agencies, and regional employers in high growth industries to prepare youths and young adults with disabilities for skilled careers.

Presidential Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities

The Task Force was a federal agency created to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the ADA, which provides resources, services and information to persons with disabilities. The website allows users to find a job or internship, learn about transition services, receive information about accommodations, receive assistance for getting start-up grants for a small business, and browse general information about federal and state disability laws. Westchester ARC

Westchester ARC is a non-profit organization that provides a variety of services to persons with disabilities in regards to employment in the Westchester, NY area. In particular, Westchester ARC provides the following programs: transition services, internship facilitation, job placement services, job coaching, pre-vocational training, and adult employment services.

Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP)

The WRP is a federal initiative operated under the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and the Department of Defense. The WRP recruits students with disabilities from over 230 colleges and universities and refers them to federal government jobs and summer internships. The WRP also provides a database for job seekers coordinated with most federal agencies.
