Marcia Scherer, Ph.D.
Project Director
Marcia Scherer, PhD, MPH, FACRM, President of the Institute for Matching Person and Technology, Editor of Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology, and Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Rochester Medical Center currently serves as Co-PI for the Center on Effective Rehabilitation Technology at BBI. Dr. Scherer has over 20 years of distinguished activities as a researcher, educator, evaluator and developer of new tools and methods to improve awareness of, access to, and favorable outcomes from assistive technology. Dr. Scherer has a Ph.D. in Family and Work Life Studies from the University of Rochester and a M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling from State University of New York at Buffalo. She is the author of Assistive Technology in the Workplace (2007) and the editor of Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology, a journal of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. As founder and Director of the Institute for Matching Person and Technology Inc., Dr. Scherer has established partnerships with rehabilitation and technology experts in the US and internationally. Dr. Scherer has developed successful empirical measures and tools to facilitate effective matching of individuals with disabilities with AT and other technologies that match their needs. Dr. Scherer is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association in Applied Experimental and Engineering Psychology and in Evaluation, Measurement, and Statistics. Dr. Scherer is also a professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. Her distinguished academic career also includes teaching in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology at the State University of New York at Buffalo and at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. As Director of the Institute for Matching Person and Technology, current and past NIDRR subcontracts include:
- RERC for the Advancement of Cognitive Technologies, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Currently working on product testing and usability.
- RRTC on Demographics and Statistics, Cornell University. From 2003-2007, the Institute led projects on matching disability data elements collected by federal agencies, as well as mapping the WHO’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to VR data, and development of a training program on the ICF for VR counselors.
- Advancing Assistive Technology Outcomes DRRP, Duke University Medical Center, Institute for Matching Person & Technology, and University of Western Ontario, November 2001- October 2006. The Institute co-led projects related to the analysis of mobility assistive technology outcomes.
- RERC on Technology Evaluation and Transfer[became T2RERC – RERC on Technology Transfer]. Dr. Scherer was Director of Consumer Evaluation from November 1995 to- January 1998 and developed a process for analyzing consumer focus group and survey data regarding views of specific features of AT products.
