Description:

Entrepreneurship is an increasingly recognized and valued employment option for people with disabilities. This Webinar describes how two programs located in Syracuse NY are using principles and practices that combine person-centered planning, business training, and business development curricula to assist people with disabilities and veterans with disabilities to start and grow their own businesses. The first of these two initiatives-"Start-UP NY", funded through the U. S. Department. of Labor is built upon a strong network of partners that include the One Stop Career Centers, Small Business Development Centers, and other public and private agencies with a three year goal of providing business training to at least 150 people with diverse disabilities and assisting at least 30 of these individuals to start their own businesses. The role of the Disability Program Navigators (DPNs) working within the One Stop Career Centers will be highlighted. The following areas will also be discussed: developing individual employment plans that include self-employment, how the One Stop Career Center systems can blend and braid resources (e.g., Vocational Rehabilitation, Veterans Administration, Workforce Investment Act,) to facilitate self-employment for its customers with disabilities. The second initiative is the Syracuse University "Entrepreneurship Boot camp for Veterans with Disabilities" that brings together a world class faculty to assist a competitively selected cadre of disabled veterans, who were recently wounded in the wars to start their own businesses in a model that has expanded to an additional three universities across the country. This Webinar will describe the various initiatives and offer recommendations for replication throughout the country.
