On Monday - September 8th, Michael Morris, BBI CEO, presented at an ODEP-PCPID Forum in Washington, DC on Employment of People with Intellectual Disabilities.
Mr. Morris offered the federal agency sponsors of the Forum a set of recommendations to advance opportunities for employment and economic self-sufficiency for individuals with intellectual disabilities nationwide.
"All individuals with disabilities want to be a part of the American Dream," said Mr. Morris. "With the alignment of public policy, financial incentives and adequate and coordinated support systems, individuals with significant disabilities can become savers, asset builders, home and business owners."
With new funding from the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University will be leading a team of researchers and practitioners to test new interventions that will help develop a roadmap out of poverty for working age adults with disabilities.
BBI fosters public-private dialogue to advance the civic, economic and social participation of persons with disabilities in a global society. The institute takes its name from Burton Blatt (1927-85), a pioneer in humanizing services for people with intellectual disabilities, a staunch advocate of deinstitutionalization and a national leader in special education. BBI currently has offices in Syracuse, New York City, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Tel Aviv.
