Mayor’s Academy on Asset Development for Persons with Disabilities and Their Families

November 13th and 14th, New York City

Hosts: The Leadership Academy is a coordinated effort between the New York City (NYC) Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, the IRS Stakeholder Partnership Education and Communication Division, the National Disability Institute, the Burton Blatt Institute of Syracuse University, the Law, Health Policy, and Disability Center of the University of Iowa, and the City University of New York.

Purpose: On November 13 and 14th in New York City, teams from twelve cities will come together to learn about successful strategies that advance economic status (financial education, homeownership, effective leveraging of public benefits, use of matched savings accounts, self-employment). Expert presenters from the IRS, United Way, National League of Cities, and the Mayor’s Office in selected cities will lead the discussion. Each selected city team will include the senior staff member from the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and the lead individual representing the Community Tax Coalition and EITC campaign. In addition, IRS field office staff from each area will participate in the Academy.

Six of the selected cities to participate in the Leadership Academy (Jacksonville, Boston, Miami, Milwaukee, Phoenix, and San Francisco) include Navigators associated with the Disability Program Navigator Initiative and their connections and knowledge in the area of disability will be key to providing guidance to these community teams. Where possible, invitations have been extended to DPNs to be involved in both the Leadership Academy and community partnerships.

During the Leadership Academy, the groups will develop an action plan to expand outreach and participation of individuals with disabilities in asset building activities. Training and technical assistance activities will support all teams over the next year to pilot and shape the Real Economic Impact Model.
