Where Will We Be in 2020?

The future civic, social and economic participation expectations for people with disabilities.

On October 10th, 2006 Syracuse University will be celebrating the first year of the Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) at a breakfast at the Pierre Hotel in New York City. It will also be honoring the legacy of Burton Blatt and the 40th anniversary of the publication of Christmas in Purgatory, the exposé that brought national attention to the plight of individuals with intellectual disabilities warehoused in state institutions.

Following the breakfast, BBI public policy expert Michael Morris and BBI Executive Director Brian McLane will lead a public forum on the future civic, social and economic participation expectations for people with disabilities.

A distinguished panel of experts will begin the conversation on forecasting the continued emergence of accessible and livable communities that value the contributions of all its members and embrace the values of inclusion and freedom. The forum will be conducted across the street from the Pierre Hotel at Syracuse University’s Lubin House, 11 East 61st Street, New York City, following the breakfast, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.

The panel presentations will encourage audience participation. The public forum will be webcast and engage the disability community to share their vision of civic, social, and economic participation in the year 2020.
